It is time again for our annual meeting and
membership drive. The meeting will be in my yard, and while usually short, you
may want to bring a chair.
Our annual dues are $60. This pays for mowing and maintenance at our 5 entrances
and around our 1.2 mile perimeter. This is a voluntary organization that exists
to keep our entrances from being an embarrassment and to help maintain our home
values. A more detailed history of HELP can be found on our website.
As we enter our 10th year, we reach a critical point in our history. This past
year our expenses were greater than our income. Because we had funds in reserve,
we were able to meet our obligations. In 2005, 152 homes paid their memberships.
In 2006, only 105 homes paid dues. From the budget figures below, you can see
our reserve funds are nearly exhausted.
During the drought last summer, the “water police” cut off some of our sprinkler
systems and we lost some plants. The sprinkler systems were running on the wrong
day. However, our sprinkler systems are controlled by the city’s Park
Department, not by us. Nevertheless, we do have some plants that need to be replaced.
In order to meet our budget, we need at least 159 of the 478 homes to pay their membership
fee. If we fall below this level, we will have to negotiate with the contractor
to reduce the number of times per month our perimeter is mowed and edged. At
present, it is maintained weekly during the peak growing seasons.
